1978 Press Photo Aerial view of barges run aground in the Mississippi River
This is an original press photo. Four diesel-fuel barges ran aground on a sand shoal in the Mississippi River at Mile 762 north of Wabasha Monday, blocking the navigational channel and halting commercial water traffic. The United States Army Corps of Engineers dispatched its large dredge Thompson to open a navigation channel around the grounded barges, but warned that river traffic probably will remain blocked until at least Wednesday morning. The barges ran aground just downstream from the confluence of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers. The Chippewa discharges huge amounts of sand into the Mississippi and the site where the grounding occurred is regularly dredged by the army engineers said the problem probably was created by a combination of sand from the Chippewa and recent dry weather, which caused a drop in the Mississippi's water level.Photo measures 8 x 10inches.
