Players control Mick the Mechanic, working for the eccentric Sheik Abdul Al Kohol, who pays him in sheep’s eyeballs instead of cash. Frustrated, Mick decides to steal the sheik’s prized car collection, navigating a series of maze-like levels to gather oil, fill the cars, and dodge the sheik’s fanatical Arabian bodyguards. Released for the ZX Spectrum’s 48K, "Turmoil" stood out for its humorous premise and fast-paced gameplay, earning praise in magazines like CRASH and Your Sinclair, and becoming a quirky hit among 1980s gamers.

David Turner, credited as the creator, shaped "Turmoil" with a focus on its playful mechanics and tight controls. Working within the Spectrum’s technical limits—its limited memory, color palette, and sound—he designed a game where players climb ladders, swing on ropes, and use oil strategically to slip guards or fuel cars. Turner’s background in programming allowed him to craft a title that balanced comedy with challenge, leveraging the Spectrum’s capabilities to create a memorable, if niche, platformer. His work helped Bug-Byte build a reputation for inventive, low-budget games on the platform.

In "Turmoil," gameplay unfolds across 26 screens, each with unique layouts featuring obstacles like conveyor belts, disappearing walls, and springboards. Players must collect oil, fill an oil can at a tap, and pour it into a car grid to make the vehicle visible and drive off, advancing to the next level. Turner included playful touches, like letting players spill oil to trip guards, adding a layer of strategy to the chaos. Its monochrome visuals and chiptune effects, typical of the Spectrum, gave it a distinct, gritty charm that hooked players seeking a lighthearted challenge in the mid-1980s.
