The peace symbol, as we know it today, originated in 1958. It was designed by Gerald Holtom, a British artist and designer, for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in the UK.
Holtom based the design on the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D", standing for "Nuclear Disarmament." The "N" is represented by two flags held in an inverted "V" shape, and the "D" is represented by one flag pointed straight up and another straight down. He enclosed these elements in a circle to create the final symbol.
The design quickly became associated with the broader peace movement, especially during the 1960s, when it was adopted by anti-war and counterculture groups worldwide.
