Rare Antique Fox Stalking Hares Pencil
& Watercolour by William Gunton, c1830
Beautifully executed in William Gunton's typical, but rather unique
style, of highly detailed pencil drawing, highlighted with gouache mixed with
gum arabic to give an almost enamel finish to the painted areas. The
pencil work allows for very fine delineation, whilst the paint brings the
animals to life within the landscape. Little is
recorded of the artist, other than his auction record and that he exhibited 3
works with the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street, London in 1829,
the subject of all three being 'game'. He is still well thought of and is a
listed artist.
He was a highly
regarded painter of country scenes and animal subjects in the early 1800s and
is better known for his landscapes. This example is as good as any of his
works. It is signed at bottom left.
A
remarkably fine graphite drawing with watercolour colouring, distinctively
executed in this striking combination of media. The image shows two hares or
possibly rabbits scampering in the foreground with a sly fox stalking them,
peering from the bushes in the back ground.
A fine
edition for a collection.
The artist’s
works have been recorded as being sold at auction nine times, mainly in the Drawing-Watercolour
category, his works which seem to fetch £200-£400
The picture is in excellent original
condition for its age. Some very slight age toning and faint marks. It is in a frame
dating to around 1969, as detailed on the reverse, given as a gift to a Dr
Jones in June of that year and those that contributed to that gift. The image
is presented with a green mount card in a gilt frame with a wire for hanging.
The frame has some slight wear.
The
frame measures approx. 32cm by 30cm by 2cm, the aperture of the mount card is approx.
15cm by 13.8cm.
