Peru’s participation in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics ended in a controversial manner. During the extra-time of the Quarter Final match between Peru & Austria (depicted in this card) Peru scored 5 goals in which 3 were nullified. Regardless of goal rejections, Peru won the match by 4-2, however, the Austrians protested and were ultimately awarded with a rematch. The rematch decision was not taken well by the Peruvian delegation who decided to boycott the Olympics and left the competition. The Colombian delegation followed Peru and also left the competition. Other Latin American countries expressed their solidarity with the unfortunate and unfair turnout Peru had suffered.
Peru surprised Europe and Olympic community of the time as they debunked the idea of Aryan superiority that the Nazis were promoting through hosting the Olympics.
This 1936 Peru squad features Lolo Fernandez, considered by many as Peru’s greatest player of all time.
