"Atlas of the History of Ukrainian Statehood" is a unique work in Ukrainian historical cartography and has its own innovative approach. The history of Ukraine is considered in it in the context of statehood. Thus, the publication contains information about more than 70 states and state entities, placed in chronological order, which existed on the territory of Ukraine from ancient times to the present. It should be noted that not all of them fully meet the criterion of sovereignty. For example, the Ukrainian Cossack states, especially after the liquidation of Zaporozhye in 1775, were not fully sovereign, recognizing the protectorate of other states. Ancient states of the IV-IX centuries meet this criterion even less. (tribal unions) and insurgent republics of the first half of the 20th century.
The Atlas also includes quasi-states (Soviet puppet republics), the creation of which the Ukrainian ethnic group had little to do with. However, these state entities were representatives of Ukraine in a certain historical period. Therefore, they are considered in the context of Ukrainian statehood.
