It was through the initiative of a young sportsman and idealist of the Italian colony of São Paulo, Luigi Cervo, inspired by the arrival of two Italian squads that would face
the teams that dominated the São Paulo football, then formed by English, Scottish and German immigrants, and ‘paulistanos’, and with the support of another young man, journalist
Vincenzo Ragognetti, that, in August 26th, 1914, the Italian colony was organized for the foundation of Palestra Itália, a club that was already born with strong ambitions, marked by
the beautiful presentation ball, with the presence of several personalities, entrepreneurs and the consul of Italy. The debut in the São Paulo soccer elite took place in 1916, and in the following year the team had a great season winning the vice-championship, which was repeated in 1919. In 1920 comes the consolidation, first by the acquisition of Parque Antárctica stadium, the main one in the city at that time, including the beautiful sports square, and also for the conquest of the São Paulo Championship, which reverberated throughout the country, encouraging the creation of other Palestras in the various states and the interior, including the Palestra Itália of Minas Gerais (now Cruzeiro) and the Palestra Itália of Paraná. Along with the consolidation of the assets came achievements in several other sports where the Palestra was also a pioneer, with emphasis on basketball and athletics, and in soccer the protagonism stood out even more with the advent of the professionalism in the early 1930s. What for many clubs became a hopeless problem, with bankruptcies, abandonment of the practice and even extinctions, in the Palestra the support of its immense crowd put the club in an even greater prominence, in the patrimony with the construction of the bleachers in reinforced concrete, the first in the country and making the Palestra Itália the largest stadium in the city, and in the field the club won the soccer championship three times, in addition to the first national championship of professional clubs, in 1933. The growth and conquests continued until the arrival of World War II, at first
concentrated in Europe, but which spread out and forced all countries to take their positions. Brazil resisted in neutrality until 1942, when it joined the allies and, within a regime of
exception, the legislation ended up forcing several clubs to change their names to avoid the politicization among sports. Thus, Palestra Itália, after much resistance, ends up changing
its name to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, but the achievements remain, including the championship of 1942, very special due to climate of adversity created by rivalry and the way
it took place, with the opponent abandoning the field. After more important achievements, at the end of the 1940s Palmeiras assembled another squad that made history between 1950 and 1951 with the conquest of ‘five crowns’. Special attention to the I World Clubs Championship, Rio Cup, playing the final against Juventus, from Italy, and having the support of more than 100,000 fans at Maracanã stadium, rescuing the national pride after the loss of the world cup months before. In the first days of 1960 came another special conquest, the Super São Paulo Championship of 1959, won precisely over the opponent with whom we were rivals throughout the decade, the Santos of Pelé, and Palmeiras becomes the only club to face it and overcome it several times, to the point of being named ‘Academy’, which in 1965 is chosen to represent the Brazilian Team at the opening of Mineirão, beating Uruguay team, so unprecedented as the conquest of two national championships in the same year, the Brazil Bowl and the Robertão in 1967. The achievements continued with new national championship in 1969 and at the beginning of the 1970s is formed a second Academy, which provides the basis of the Brazilian Team, winning two Brazilian Championships and getting its peak in 1974, during the playoffs of the São Paulo Championship, against the main rival. In the 1990s Palmeiras became a pioneer once again, building a unique and
unprecedented partnership in a joint management, which allowed the formation of a strong cast that, over a period of eight years, won three São Paulo championships, a Rio-SP championship, one Libertadores, several national and international tournaments, in addition to numerous epic games, such as the finals of 1993, 1994 and 1999. These achievements consolidated to the club the reward with the title of Champion of the 20th Century by the press and the São Paulo Soccer Federation. Now, on the eve of celebrating its first centenary, Palmeiras once again performs a series of innovative and pioneer projects, beginning by Allianz Park, internationally recognized as the best and most sustainable project among the various on-going ones, in addition to a full refurbishment of the facilities of the Soccer Academy and the social club, with the construction of new spaces, as well as automation and deployment of specialized systems in various professional and social areas. The result is already starting to appear, but the ultimate goal of all these investments and transformations is to build the facilities for Palmeiras to continue being the club of major achievements of the national scenario and also become the Champion of the 21st Century.
The Brazilian Post pays tribute and celebrates, in this issue, one of the greatest clubs in the Brazilian and world soccer, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the Sociedade
Esportiva Palmeiras.
