Mogens Ballin Danish Silver Arts & Crafts Spoon
Danish silver Arts & Crafts spoon by the workshop of important silversmith Mogens Ballin (1871-1914). Ballin founded his workshop north of Copenhagen in 1900 and soon became known for the artistry and innovation it brought to crafting metal items. Ballin started as a painter and traveled to France where he became inspired and acquainted with Paul Gaugin and the other Symbolists and introduced that movement to Denmark. He stopped painting when he opened his workshop and, inspired by the English Arts & Crafts movement, he devoted all his energy to the construction of beautiful objects for everyday use. His first artistic manager was the Danish sculptor Siegfried Wagner. And during their time at the workshop employees included Just Andersen & Georg Jensen, who gathered priceless inspiration for their later work. The spoon has a hand hammered bowl and hand pierced at the handle. It's 7 1/4" long and weighs 38 grams. Marked with the HB mark used after 1908 when Peter Hertz took control of the workshop, along with M.BALLINS EFT and the Danish silver content: 826S. In excellent condition with minor wear. Works by Ballin are scarce and prized by collectors.
