This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing.   This sample features two different barbing patents.  First patent is by Hiram B. Scutt and is dated June 18, 1878.  Second patent is from Purches Miles dated October 8, 1878. This wire is called "Scutt's Arrow Plate and Miles Vicious Two Point Staple Barbs Combination Barbs on Two Twisted Lines" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 41-F). (Hagemeier does not show this long pointed staple barb).  This wire features two round line wires twisted together. Scutt barbs are sheet metal and cut into an arrowhead shaped, with points bent to hold barbs between lines.  Miles barbs are two pointed made by bending a round wire into a staple shape and crimping it around both line wires. This would be a factory application to fill in a skipped barb.   Wire sample is 18" in length and shows moderate pitting.  There are three barbs, with Miles barb at center of cut.   Barbs are well spaced and cut is well centered. There are no bent, broken, or missing barbing points.
