Charles Williams worked at Amen House, the London offices of the Oxford University Press, as an editor and wrote several Masques to be performed by the staff, on whose characters the parts were based. This carol is in a literary vein - "The star that all lives shall seek/That makers of books desire; All that in anywise speak, Look to this silver fire: Shakespeare in utmost night/ Moved on no other quest/ Than waits hi who reads aright/ Edition and palimsest."
A poor copy of a scarce early work by Williams.
