This is a vintage antique sample of patented antique barbed wire. This sample features a Hiram B. Scutt patent, dated June 18, 1878.  This wire is called "Scutt's Early Clip or Shepherds Hook Clip Sheet Metal Barb," by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 696-B).  This wire features two twisted together round line wires.    Barbs are four pointed made from sheet metal.  Sheet metal is cut into an arrowhead shape, and pointed end has two parallel cuts.  Tongue of metal made from these two cuts is bent down over one line wire, with tip bent upwards. Wire sample shows light pitting.  There are three barbs. Barbs are well spaced, and cut is well centered.  There is some bending of points, but no broken or missing barbing points.
