The Battle of Poltava in 1709 was one of the central events of the Great Northern War of 1700-1721, which had a decisive impact on its results, and thus on the fate of all participating countries. Why the events near Poltava, seemingly well-known and understandable, became a kind of watershed in the history of Cossack Ukraine, says a new study by historian Oleksiy Sokyrka.

The first part of the book includes the background of the Great Northern War, the participation of the Ukrainian army in it, the background to the Battle of Poltava, and a description of the forces of the Swedish army. The second part includes a description of the troops of the Ukrainian hetmans, the Russian army, a detailed review of the main stages of the Battle of Poltava on June 27, 1709 and its consequences.
