--Published in 1966, the book is set in the US during the 1950s and '60s and explores issues of race, class, and politics.
The story follows the life of a young African-American man who grows up in the South and then moves to the North to attend college. David is an intelligent and ambitious man who is determined to succeed despite the many obstacles he faces because of his race.
-As David grows up, he is exposed to the realities of segregation and racism in the South, and he becomes increasingly involved in the civil rights movement. He also becomes involved in leftist politics, joining a group of activists who are working to bring about social change.
-Throughout the book, he struggles to reconcile his ideals with the harsh realities of the world around him. Through personal setbacks and tragedies, he remains committed to his beliefs and continues to fight for justice and equality.
-The title is a reference to the biblical story of David and Goliath. David defeats the giant with five smooth stones taken from a stream...which is meant to symbolize the struggle.
