This 1954 Queen Elizabeth II Central Bank of Ceylon 5
Rupees dated October 16th, 1954. These
QE II 5 Rupee notes that were issued on June 3rd, 1952, dated a year before her
coronation are the world's first dated Currency Notes with her portrait after
she ascended to the throne on February 6th, 1952. Ceylon was also the first
Commonwealth Nation to stop using the QEII portrait on their banknotes. Last
issued with date October 16th, 1954. The note has an orange base color with aqua,
green and brown underprint. The front of the note has a young portrait of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth facing right, within panel on left. Similar panel for
watermark a Chinze on the right. The ‘CENTRAL BANK OF CEYLON’ at
upper center above. This note is issued on behalf of the Government of
Ceylon and is legal tender in Ceylon for the payment of any amount in
three or four lines. The value FIVE RUPEES in two lines in English at
center. The serial numbers (G14885029) are shown right top and left bottom in
black with two different types of ‘5’ showing in the top and bottom corners of
the note. The back of the note is green and brown in color. The ‘CENTRAL BANK
OF CEYLON’ is shown like a banner at the upper center above. On the
reverse side in the middle of the note you have the statue of Parākramabāhu I,
also known as Parakramabahu the Great, a Sinhala king of Polonnaruwa from 1153
to 1186 in the medieval City of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka and ‘5’ showing
in all four corners of the note. The certification of this banknote is
uncertified, and it is a great piece of history from Ceylon (now known as Sri
Lanka). This banknote is a must-have for any collector of world paper money.
