The Okinawa Women Ritual is a custom on the main island of Okinawa in which a woman was recognized as a mature woman when she underwent a "Hajichi" needle thrust). Hajichis were socially accepted and normative at the time, with women seeking spiritual support from the Hajichis and society recognizing them as mature women for having undergone the Hajichis. In addition, the rituals associated with Hajicis regulated women's behavior and also served a decorative function.
One of the most important sources on Okinawa's Women rituals is “Okinawa's Women Rituals: Report on the Okinawa Main Island Hari-Tsuki Survey” edited by the Yomitan Village History and Folklore Museum. This report contains about 800 cases of women's testimonies about Hajichi and is known as a basic document.
