(Gnomeo and Juliet) original watercolor concept drawing used in the production of the 2011 Walt Disney animated feature film Gnomeo and Juliet, 9 1/2 by 11 inches, in near excellent condition (shows a little wear). In early drafts of the Gnomeo script, Tybalt is shattered after running his lawnmower into a wall, and Featherstone the plastic flamingo takes the junk in the shed in which he was locked for years to create an electric Frankenstein device to restore Tybalt back to life. This drawing by layout artist Tom Shannon shows the scene. On the right is the character Shroom, who was a Red in this draft. (In the actual movie, Featherstone is not a tech genius, Shroom is the Blue sidekick of Gnomeo, and Tybalt does not get put back together.) The drawing was created by Tom Shannon who worked on the movie before the final script was written and the final characters were created. Tom worked at Disney for over 20 years as a layout artist and would normally have been assigned to develop story details including the design of details in characters and backgrounds before the final script was approved and animation began. He did not work on the later incarnations of the script and did not receive any on screen credit for his contribution. He worked on many Disney films including Aladdin, Atlantis:The Lost Empire, Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Mulan. This drawing comes from the Tom Shannon estate sale held several years ago. It is very unusual to find actual drawings from animation movies that come from discarded scenes.
In the movie, Gnomeo and Juliet was a variation of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in which gnomes in adjacent gardens had a long running feud. Gnomeo was a gnome who wore a blue hat and Juliet was from the red hat gnomes. Gnomeo and Juliet was graced with the voices of many of the best English actors including James McAvoy (Gnomeo), Emily Blunt (Juliet), Ashley Jensen (Nanette), Jim Cummings (Featherstone), James Stathem (Tybald), and Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Ozzy Osbourne, Patrick Stewart, and Julie Walters in other parts.
