Challenge Records 10-inch 78 RPM record # 839 is "A High Silk Hat and a Walking Cane" by Ray Ball and his Guitar; and "She Was a Moonshiner's Daughter" by Bob Fagan. According to Tony Russell's "Country Music Records" Discography, Ray Ball is a pseudonym for Frank Marvin, and Bob Fagan is a pseudonym for Chezz Chase. Both sides were recorded in New York, the former on August 7, 1929, the latter on July 15, 1929. Also included is the Challenge Records sleeve shown in the pictures, but it is creased, chipped and torn, and doesn't add to the overall value.
The playing surfaces look to be in almost unplayed condition, still beautifully shiny, and hardly any visible surface wear of any great significance. The record has a slight warp, however, which could manifest itself in any number of ways. Both sides, for instance, played through without jumping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, and the warp was barely audible at all on the Ray Ball side, but there were audible passages of swishing and light thudding on the other side. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well it will play on your equipment.
