Antique Chinese Rice Barrell, hand painted with scenes of scholarship and natural animal life. Specifically: 1. a young woman reading, 2. a yound man writing or drawing calligraphy, 3. ducks on a lake, and, 4. a crested bird with an animated expression. The top of the barrell is also a painted surface with a representation of a dog (I think!) This is the only section of the barrell with actual damage to the decorative image, as for example, a spill, or water damage. Each decorative scenes is placed within a decorative surround comprised of various design motifs.
BInside both top and bottom portions of the barrell are clearly signed. I have no idea regarding the identity of the artist. Beyond some study of Confucius and Chu-Hsi (the 11th C. Neo-Confucianist), I am not among the Asian literati.
This object is charming and of some cultural significance.
Culturally, scholarship themes are traditionally quite important in Confucian thought. The two people in the images are youthfull figures.
Dimensions: The rice barrell top portion is 10" diameter and 11.25" diameter, and 3.25" long. The bottom portion is 11" tall, 11.5" diameter at the upper side and 9.5" diameter at the bottom.Weight is 4 pounds and 9OZ. Total height is about 113.5". Please note, the top sits squarely upon the borrom of the barrell. However, the two portions are not screwed together, or bound in any way. The top merely sits upon the bottom portion.
