The December issue of a+u will feature Ederer Mosaevi Inderbizan Architecten (EMI). Based in Switzerland and founded by Ron Ederer, Elie Mosaevi, and Christian Inderbizan, EMI is involved in exhibitions, renovations, new construction, and urban planning. Among them, the collective housing is at the center of their interest, reinterpreting the small elements that bring about human agency and pleasure in the dwelling. EMI, who has "deepened what might be called an obsession with doors," is a storyteller and extends functional architectural elements in everyday life through casual manipulations, such as the bending of a wall or the absence of a lintel. The 21 works presented here show how EMI embeds poetry into rational design and transcends mere containment, drifting between the two metaphors of ruin and machine and moving through the concepts of garden and landscape, villa and building. This issue begins and ends with an installation. The first challenges the concepts of inside and outside, and the last deals with the possibilities of architecture in the Anthropocene. In between are projects that question architectural norms, such as the townhouse on Stockmattstrasse, which introduces unconventional construction methods, and the performative house, which revisits fixed architectural relationships by rotating walls, lamps, and cabinets.
