The whole novel is permeated with deep symbolism, and the best thing about it is the creation of the image of the Yellow Prince, an allegory of evil and hunger, which bears the entire burden of those difficult times. This image impresses with its powerful symbolism and emotional charge, reflecting the tragic events of the Holodomor - genocide.

   The author skilfully combines realism and symbolism, crossing the border between literature and memory. Through his characters and images, Vasyl Barka conveys not only the terrible picture of the Holodomor, but also the psychological state of the people, their despair, the struggle for survival.
