The October issue of a+u features 18 works by architect Marie-Josée Van Hee. Van Hee practices in Ghent, Belgium, where she continues to create works that, according to guest editor Hera Van Sandes, "evoke rest, remembrance, peace, and tranquility" and "blend into their environment as if they had always been there. The actual work is concentrated in Flanders, and is a very personal extension of Van Hee's aesthetic sensibility, which includes cuisine, literature, and fashion. The exhibition begins with aerial photographs of the site and sketches by Van Hee that capture the context of the site. These sketches, or "black drawings," are made by layering pencil lines over and over again, and the architectural images Van Hieh experiences in his mind are "projected three-dimensionally onto the margins of the paper through his dominant hand," and he "moves back and forth between various scales, successfully landing his imagination in a real world full of constraints. In the opening essay, Sam de Voogt writes that the architectural image is "projected three-dimensionally onto the margins of the paper through the dominant hand.
