DICKEY DOWNY
The Autobiography of a Bird
by
Virginia Sharpe Patterson
Illustrated by
Elizabeth M. Hallowell

Details: This is a book of children's stories with birds as the main characters. The stories are written to enhance knowledge of the importance of birds. As the preface states, "If children are taught to love and protect the birds they will remember the lesson when they grow old.
"Written specifically to decry the use of bird plumage and skins at the beginning of the 20th century, the book stays fairly well on task. Birds were in serious trouble from human excess, many killed to decorate women's hats. The book is penned as the autobiography of a bird, [a bobolink named Dickey Downy] who is highly anthropomorphic in nature, as he comments on the Christian virtues of the human characters in the book."
Contains four color illustrations, and smaller decorative drawings at the heads of chapters.
A fine addition for your bookshelf!
Condition: A little edge and surface wear, name in front, a couple of small edge tears, otherwise in good condition with a fairly firm binding and clean pages.

About Us:
Rivendell Antiquarian Books sells used rare, vintage and collectable books predominantly from pre 1970. We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free.
We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.
Customer Service:
Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help.
Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!
Packaging:
We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.
