"Sugoroku" is a traditional Japanese board game played with dice.During the Heian period (794-1185), it became a popular game among Japanese aristocrats.
The pictured sugoroku presented in this book were developed artistically in the late Edo period (1603-1868), when the extremely colorful woodblock prints known as nishikie were produced.
Sugoroku were very popular, and the best painters of the time drew the original pictures. Careful examination of these paintings, which were drawn with great attention to detail, reveals the lifestyles and ideals of the people of the Edo period.
