RARE H&D Playing Cards - Graphic Design promotion by Miami's preeminent printer circa 1980s-90s
These rare print samples are priceless! You shouldn't be able to purchase them. Instead they should be in the collection of a Miami graphic design museum – if there was one. In the 1980s-90s Haff-Daugherty Graphics (H&D) was unquestionably THE printer in Miami as far as all the top-notch graphic design firms were concerned. H&D courted graphic designers by supporting local AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) events and engaging these same designers and design firms to design promotional packages, like these cards, that H&D fabricated and distributed to showcase their production abilities.
The concept for these Playing Cards as well as the design and art direction were by the Image Factory. Lindgren & Smith were the artist representatives for the four illustrators, Susan Leoboldis, Yan Nascimbone, Cynthia von Buhlell and Bruno Paciull. Each artist illustrated a different suit.

Diamonds mean many things - luck, wealth, power. They reflect light and are beautiful objects but are mined in harsh conditions where lives are risked. I found the face cards interesting because they also have a duality to their images as icons both light & dark and this fit in nicely with the graphic structure of a card that has to read from both directions.
The cards developed in a kind of Liberace/Vegas direction because of the icons and the materials that seemed to work with them. The number cards are done in metal and scratched out, because diamonds can be harsh, sharp and kind of ugly too.

As an illustrator, | often hide important information (behind a door, in the dark of night, in the distance... or off-frame) while add ing unnecessary detail to the image, my purpose being to ignite the viewer's imagination: Here I tried to suggest an interaction between the King, Queen and Jack of Clubs; it is then up to the viewer to imag ine the nature of this interaction - a story - and possibly a connection with the elements that are on the number cards.

HEARTS
Cynthia Von Buhlell resides and paints at her home, Castle von Buhler, in Boston.
Her antique style began innocently enough by painting climbing vines on the interior Castle walls, which later blossomed into portraits and still-lifes for magazines, albums, and book covers for companies such as The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Sony Records, Penguin Putnam, Viking, and Houghton Mifflin. Articles about Cynthia's work have been featured in The Boston Globe, Entertainment Weekly, Step-by-Step, How and Print. Cynthia has shown her work repeatedly at The Museum for American Illustration, and has garnered accolades from American Illustration, The Society of Illustrators, and Communication Arts. Cynthia studied art at The Art Institute of Boston and Richmond College at Kensington in London.
Cynthia also illustrates and writes children's books. Currently she is illustrating a story by Martha Stewart as part of a benefit project by Steven Spielberg.
Being the Countess of Castle von Buhler, I thought that I should make myself the Queen of Hearts and my husband Adam, the King. The Jack is my good friend and art partner, Xavier, Like many Countesses, our castle is in a bit of disrepair. Cracked walls and a few leaks here and there. I recreated pieces of our walls for the number cards. The Queen of Sicants cures all types of heart ailments; the most important of which are broken hearts. She says that if you take a heart milagro, made in Peru, and cry broken heart tears upon it, it will rust. You then take the milagro and nail it into the home of the heart breaker. Within two months you will be healed and the heart breaker's heart will be broken,

SPADES

Given the suit of Spades with the suicide King and the one-eyed Jack, I created a story revolving around the Queen of Spades. The king, frustrated in his attempts to please the Queen with gifts, is on the brink of committing suicide. The Jack is left powerless by his naive envy of the king and his love for the Queen, who spurns them both. The Queen is insatiable, and despite the efforts of the lower spades to please her, she nevertheless eats them in a bowl of soup.
