Liner Note Author: Michael Dunnington.
Ray Price was one of the great Texan honky tonkers and his band incubated tremendous talent -- Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, and Johnny Paycheck all played in his Cherokee Cowboys -- but he was also one of the great country balladeers. That side is what's chronicled on Hux's 2013 compilation Welcome to My World: The Love Songs of Ray Price, a 21-track collection that focuses exclusively on his smoother recordings from the '60s and '70s. Much of this material has eluded compilers and, strictly speaking, this isn't a collection of hits either; "She's Got to Be a Saint" hit number one on the Billboard country charts and "That's What Leaving's About" barely made the charts, peaking at 66, but that's it. Instead, think of Welcome to My World as a portrait of the softer side of Price, a showcase for his easy listening records, the songs that could easily have slid onto the adult contemporary pop charts (he did chart there, with singles that are nowhere to be found here), and in that sense it's welcome indeed, as there has been no other disc to dig into this area of Price's career (indeed, many of these songs never showed up on CD prior to this). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
