After roughly half a decade as the voice for Philly soul legends Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, singer Teddy Pendergrass cut out on his own in 1977 with a self-titled debut. While throwing in just a touch of the disco of the time (effectively on his first R&B top ten hit "I Don't Love You Anymore"), Pendergrass wisely stuck to the classic revved-up soul and quivering torch songs perfectly matching his seductive, gravel-tinted voice.
