The first Australian girl guides began meeting in 1909 - the same year in which companies of girl guides began to form in England. These groups were known by various names and wore different uniforms and they were unaware of each other in the beginning. Their activities, however, were all based on the game laid down for their brothers by Robert Baden-Powell in "Scouting for Boys". 

By the 1920s guiding in Australia was established in every state, and soon became a national organisation. Australian girl guides therefore have behind them 80 years of history which has never before been recorded in a single volume. This why "From A Flicker To A Flame" has been written. The book describes the origins of guiding in each Australian state; the great gatherings of girls that have occurred over the years; the work of girl guides in times of hardship and suffering - and much more.
