Here's a useful little gold and silver toothpick, produced by W.S. HICKS  out of New York. The W.S. HICKS was well known for high quality fountain pens & pencils and was a favored source for the Tiffany company in the 19th century.  Of course the company was in business well into the 20th century and operated by Hicks' Sons,  hence dating of the pieces is a little difficult. However these gold toothpicks were very popular in the 19th century. This is a ring topped toothpick for neck wear. It is 3-1/4" long with the pick extended and 2-1/4" with it retracted. Advancing/retracting is via twisting the end below the ring. Also below the ring, the piece is imprinted STERLING followed by the tiny Hicks hallmark.  The pick itself is just  over 3/4" long and flat like a paddle. Not being marked, I acid tested the pick and received a solid positive 14K result. The tested section on the tip is visible and slightly sharpens the point. Great little piece.
