This is a rare antique medal commemorating the centenary of Sunday Schools in 1880.

 

Robert Raikes was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman. He was educated at The Crypt School Gloucester. He was noted for his promotion of Sunday schools which pre-dated state schooling and was by 1831 schooling 1,250,000 children. They are seen as the precursor schools of the English state school system.

 

The front has the bust of Robert Raikes, with the legend:

 ROBERT RAIKES

FOUNDER OF SUNDAY SCHOOLS

 

The reverse has the following information around the outer edge:

TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO

WHEN HE IS OLD HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT

The center reads:

SUNDAY SCHOOL

CENTENARY

1880

IN

COMMEMORATION

OF THE

ESTABLISHMENT

OF

SUNDAT SCHOOLS.

 

The medal retains the original pin and ribbon, the ribbon has a printed shield which has inside written:

CENTENARY

OF

SUNDAY

SCHOOLS

1880

 

No maker's marks.

 

The medal is offered in good antique condition. 
It measures approx. 4cm in diameter by 8.8cm.

 

A rare collectable piece. This would make a great addition to a themed collection.
