THE CAR AND LOCOMOTIVE CYCLOPEDIA
The Car Builder's Cyclopedia, first published in 1879 as the "Car Builder's Dictionary," and the Locomotive Cyclopedia, first published in 1906 as the "Locomotive Dictionary."
By resolution of the fifth annual convention of the Master BCar Builders' Association held in 1872 at Richmond, Virginia, a committee was appointed to publish an illustrated book defining and describing railroad cars and their components. This committee completed its work with the publication of the first edition of the "Car Builder's Dictionary" in 1879. Ten editions were published from 1879 to 1922 when the A.A.R. Mechanical Division's General Committee authorized changing the name to "Car Builder's Cyclopedia of American Practice." Under the new title eleven editions were published from 1925 to 1961.
In 1905 at the thirty-eighth convention of the Railway Master Mechanics' Association in Manhattan Beach, N.Y., a resolution empowered the Railroad Gazette (now Railway Age) to publish a similar dictionary covering locomotives and their components. Five editions of the "Locomotive Dictionary" were produced from 1906 to 1919. In 1921 the General Committee authorized the change of title to "Locomotive Cyclopedia of American Practice"; ten editions were published under this name from 1922 to 1956.
All editions of both publications, now combined in the Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia, have been prepared under supervision of committees appointed first by the Master Car Builders' Association and the Railway Master Mechanics' Association for their respective dictionaries and later by the A.A.R. Mechanical Division for both cyclopedias. Committee members, have always been outstanding authorities on cars and locomotives selected from both railroad and A.A.R. personnel.
