Lenco Idler Wheel Spring Enhancer and Damper.

I set up my Lenco Goldring 99 with the base removed on a cradle so I could observe the operation of the idler wheel.

I noticed the tension of the spring wasn’t quite there anymore and the idler wheel was coming away from the platter although it was still making contact with the conical motor pulley.

This resulted in fluctuations in speed which at times when it was just briefly not making contact wasn’t that noticeable due to the fly wheel effect.

Other times when it wasn’t making contact for extended periods the speed reduction was very noticeable.

Therefore, the tension of the spring is critical.

Instead of going to the expense of a new spring I researched what was available and came up with this red rubber band which enhances the tension of a weakened spring and if threaded through the spring also acts as a damper to any vibration of the spring.

Included with the red rubber band is a length of wire to help thread it through the centre of the spring, the wire is then discarded.

With the platter removed take off the spring end loop from the peg on the deck. The other end of the spring is normally permanently connected to the arm. Loop the band with the wire over the rubber grommet end of the arm and move it to the other end near the wheel so that one end is looped near to the end of the spring. Thread the wire through the spring and pull the band through. Discard the wire and then loop the spring and the band over the peg on the deck.
