The basic principle of automotive alternators
The automotive alternator is also based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a magnetic flux is cut by a conductor moving in a magnetic field, an induced electric potential is generated in the conductor. If you try to make the flux and the conductor move in relative cutting motion, an electric potential can be generated in the conductor. This phenomenon is called "electromagnetic induction".
The basic principle of generators is to generate electrical energy (voltage and current) from the electric potential generated by electromagnetic induction. Although a
single conductor moving in a magnetic field can generate an electric potential, it is very small. If two conductors are connected at the beginning and end, then a secondary electric potential will be generated, resulting in a double electric potential.
When a conductor in the form of a coil is rotated in a magnetic field, a larger electric potential is generated, resulting in voltage and current.
The generator is based on this principle, and the coil is rotated in a magnetic field to generate electrical energy, and the current generated is an alternating current that changes in size and direction.As the coil generates more power, the coil is more likely to heat up due to the action of the current. Therefore, the coil is installed on the outer layer of the generator for cooling purposes. Therefore, all AC generating coils (stator core) are in the outer layer, while the rotating magnets (rotor core) are in the coils.
Main functions of an automotive alternator
-Generation of electricity
Transferring the engine rotation to the pulley with a multi-slotted belt, turning the electromagnetized rotor and generating AC current in the stator coil.
-Rectification
Because the electricity generated in the stator coil is AC, it cannot be used in the DC apparatus installed in the vehicle, so a rectifier is used to change the AC current to DC.
-Regulating Voltage
A regulator is used to adjust the voltage of the generator to keep the voltage stable even when the generator speed or load changes.
