What is a timing chain?

A timing chain is responsible for controlling your pistons and valves, making sure they operate precisely when they need to inside your engine cylinders. Four-stroke engines operate on a cycle with, yes, you guessed it, four strokes within each one.

• A timing chain is much heavier than a rubber timing belt. This increases fuel consumption, and in turn, affects your fuel economy, adding to pollution, and impacts engine power.
• A timing chain is far noisier than a timing belt.
• Due to the extra weight, a timing chain is often only available for use on larger engine cylinders.
• They're considerably more expensive to replace and to work on.
• A timing chain requires constant lubrication.

Is the timing chain immune to mechanical failures? 

The simple answer is No, it is not.

Timing chain problems are not uncommon, especially in high-mileage vehicles. Like any other moving mechanical component inside any engine, a timing chain is subject to wear. A timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil. Lack of oil changes, low oil level or poor oil quality can cause the timing chain to wear faster.

When does a timing chain need to be replaced?

The timing chain normally needs to be replaced between 80,000 and 120,000 miles unless there is a specific problem. Issues with the chain are common in higher mileage vehicles. If driving an older vehicle, or one with close to 100,000 miles, it is recommended to look for symptoms of the timing chain going bad or failing.
 

Signs a timing chain needs to be replaced include

• Later model VVT applications will generate engine codes and check engine lights prior to engine rattle
• Older, pre-VVT applications will generate engine rattle.

Should you also replace the sprockets?

Using a worn sprocket may result in the chain not meshing with the worn sprocket, which could result in poor engine performance. Installion

1. The engine accessories are removed, the engine oil is drained, and the front engine cover is removed.
2. The tension on the timing chain tensioner is released.
3. The camshaft and crankshaft gears are removed along with the timing chain, and the technician makes special note of the position they were in.
4. The new timing chain is installed on the gears, then the gears and chain are re-installed in the same position.
5. The front cover is re-installed, the accessories mounted, and engine oil topped up.
6. The technician runs the engine and road tests to confirm the repair is successful.
