ENGRAVED WITH THE INITIALS ‘FROM ‘CS’ TO ‘BP’ (THE COUNTESS OF STRATHMORE TO BERYL POIGNAND. (1887-1965 ). COMPLETE WITH ITS ORIGINAL BOX ENGRAVED WITH MISS POIGNAND’S INITIALS.

Cecilia Nina Bowes-Lyon,( 11 September 1862 – 23 June 1938) was the Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. GCVO, DSt.J and mother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon – later to be Queen Consort to George the VI and subsequently H.M. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

Dorothy Irene Beryl POIGNAND (known as Beryl) (1887-1965)

Beryl Poignand was the Governess and teacher to the children of the Countess of Strathmore including Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen to and then Queen Mother. A close friend of the Royal family and confidante to the Queen Mother for over 50 years until her death in 1965. THIS WAS HER WATCH and is descended straight from the family.

THE WATCH:

CASE:

This superb 3 piece ‘half hunter’ watch case is made from solid 18 carat gold (tested and hall marked). This incredible solid 18 carat gold lady's wristwatch is absolutely stunning and is in lovely condition for its age. The case snap on bezel is stunningly beautiful and has a fantastic iridescent light blue and white enameled finish in the design of a flower (see pics). The enameling shows light wear micro scratches from normal age related use. This case front looks absolutely stunning. The case back is Initialed ‘CS to BP’ 1927. The case back is in very good condition with only light wear. The case measures 2.1cms (21mm) across excluding the crown. The case is stamped for George Stockwell and is hallmarked for London 1919. This leads me to believe that maybe this watch was a personal possession of the Countess of Strathmore who then gifted it to Beryl Poignand in 1927.

DIAL:

When the snap on case front is opened, this beautiful watch has an original white sterile dial (meaning no numerals on the dial as the case front has enamelled beautiful numbers) showing a light normal age related patina. I can see no hairlines. The dial has two purple steel ‘spade design’ hands which are also in nice original condition. The small half hunter case front crystal is in good showing light age related wear. The small crystal shows light wear.

MOVEMENT:

This lovely watch has a high quality 15 jewels MOVADO CAL 760 unsigned lever movement. This beautiful movement has lovely Geneva striping and is of very good quality. The movement is in working order and is crown wound and set. The winding parts are a little worn but the watch winds ok and sets as it should at the moment. The watch has been oiled and timed by my watchmaker, but as always a FULL SERVICE would be recommended for continuing performance, timekeeping and future operation. It is keeping time to within a couple mins per day although I do not think that this is really important on such an historical piece as this.

BAND:

This stunning wristwatch has its original very rare solid 15 carat gold sprung link bracelet with the central links being made of PLATINUM. These links are stamped ‘platin’ and the gold is stamped ‘15ct’.

BOX:

This gorgeous wristwatch comes complete with its original brown colored period box which is stamped in gold with the initials ‘BP’ (Beryl Poignand) It shows some internal age related wear but the hinges on the lid are good.
