As Norman and Scott in Historic Haunted America (1995) state, "The colorful legacies of Yankee Jim Robinson, Thomas Whaley, and others, together with at least one alleged murder, provide the Whaley House with a history of hauntings that began at least fifty years ago." The first to suggest the presence of ghosts was Corinne Lillian Whaley, Thomas and Anna's youngest daughter, who lived in the house until she died in 1953, at the age of 89. In her memoirs, Corinne wrote that a "force" of some sort didn't want her in the upstairs bedrooms. She said so many strange occurrences had taken place that she slept only fitfully and was always uncomfortable in her ancestral home. What disturbed Corinne about the house also puzzled her visitors. Numerous guests reported that as they sat chatting in the parlor, the distinct sounds of a man pacing in heavy boots could be heard upstairs. Corinne tried to ignore the noises and her friends often assumed that another person was in the house. However, as the afternoon or evening wore on no one else appeared. Corinne believed that it was Yankee Jim Robinson walking in her house.
