The coin was designed by Irish artist Gabriel Hayes and featured a stylized bird
adapted from the book of kells on one side and the Irish harp on the other
It was the second smallest denomination of the pound and was first issued in 1971 when Irish currency was decimalised.
The coin was bronze in composition originally which consisted of copper, tin and zinc
and from 1990 onwards it was produced in a copper based steel
It had a diameter of 20.32mm and weighed 3.56 grams. It was worth 1/100 of a pound
It was removed from circulation in 2002 when the euro was introduced
