Educated at the Munster School of Art, the artist Friedrich Ludwig Scharf joined the Mecklenberg Army circa 1910 and served in the 1914-18 War. He was usually referred to as Ludwig Scharf after the signatures of his works, who was a professional soldier in the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Jäger Battalion 14 at the beginning of the First World War , where he held the rank of standard bearer. During the course of the war, Scharf spent most of the time on the Eastern Front, where he took part in combat operations together with cavalry regiments as well as reserve and land storm troops, but also found time to precisely record the uniforms and equipment of these various units in numerous watercolors and colored woodcuts. Scharf acquired the rank of deputy officer in 1918 . Even after 1918, evidently until The Second World War curtailed his activities and postwar he turned to decorating china and textiles for a while in order to make a living. He still painted military subjects however up to his death in 1965.
