This camera has so-called "x-ray" capability. This model is an "original" camera. "Original" (1998 and earlier) cameras have full exposure control in NightShot mode. Sony modified the infrared feature of 1998. "Modified" (all newer cameras) cameras are all way overexposed in NightShot mode when used in daylight. The "unmodified" camera can be used in Nightshot mode in the "sports mode"-only in daylight with auto exposure control.
The advantage of full exposure control is that a variety of different IR filters (different nanometer cutoffs) can be used without worrying about image overexposure. "X-ray" Effect Some quickly experimented with the NightShot feature in sunlight and discovered that if an infrared transmitting filter (which passes only infrared light and blocks all visible light) was placed on the camcorder and NightShot was turned on, the camcorder recorded pure infrared images during the daytime. It was quickly discovered that the NightShot cameras had certain "X-ray" like properties.
