Company History

May. 1942

Kansai Steamship’s predecessor, Kansai Kisen Kaisha, founded as a domestic passenger ship operator under Osaka Shosen Kaisha.

Jan. 1951

A liner-service route opened between Japan and Bangkok.

Exands liner and tramper services to and from Okinawa, South Korea, Southeast Asia and Australia.

Jun. 1956 ～ Jun. 1958

Builds oceangoing freighters to strengthen its overseas business.

Feb. 1975

Spins off from Kansai Kisen Kaisha and sets up a new company, Kanki Gaiko（Kansai Steamship）.

Takes over the following routes from Kansai Kisen Kaisha, primarily carrying general merchandise and textile products: liner-service routes to and from Bangkok and Taiwan, a tramper-service route to and from Southeast Asia and deep-sea tramper-service routes to and from Australia and others.

Sep. 1982

Constructs pure car carriers as part of its business-enlargement efforts and charters them out on long-term contracts to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (begins the ship-chartering business).

1985

Enhances its steel stock transport to Bangkok to keep up with the growing number of Japanese enterprises making inroads into Thailand. Establishes a position as a steel stock carrier.

1994

Builds the MV Nanyo and MV Toyo, both optimum for moving steel stock, which later leads to the Siam series.

Jan. 2002

Changes its corporate name from Kanki Gaiko to Kansai Line（Kansai Steamship）.
