In the comic, Crankshaft is a former Toledo Mud Hens pitcher.
“That allowed me to create that kind of close call,” Batiuk said. ”And I was able to create that evening where the Tigers come down to play the Mud Hens in Toledo and Crankshaft pitches against Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, and Rudy York.”
Crankshaft, readers learn, struck out the three all stars in order and appeared on his way to join them in the Motor City. The Tigers sent scouts to Toledo to watch one of the Hens ace’s next starts.
