Original pen and ink illustration drawing by Chicago artist and illustrator Franz Altschuler (1923-2009) used as the dust jacket illustration for "Witch Dog" by John and Patricia Beatty, published by Morrow in 1968. This is the original drawing used in production with printer's marks and 3 acetate overlays. Also included are 2 variations on the jacket. The one with the blue on the left edge was the one that was used. The other, purple one, may be the only existing copy of this variation. The illustration is ink on textured paper mounted on a board. The board measures 20" by 13" and the illustration itself is approx 10" by 9". German born, he came to the U.S. with his family in 1936. Mr. Altschuler came to Chicago in 1946 as a student of the
acclaimed painter, photographer and design professor Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
at the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology. He was an illustrator for Playboy almost from the magazine's inception & his illustrations graced many book covers & interiors, including children's books, fiction, textbooks and annual reports. He
taught at the Institute of Design in the late 1950s and the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1970s. The work itself is unsigned but it credited on the DJ flap as shown above. This is a unique work by him from his estate.
