Small format. 16 x 11 cms. 252 pages, frontispiece. Owner's name and bookseller's label of R. Grant & Son, Edinburgh . Good, small ink mark to fore-edge and a couple of other minor marks, spine and rear hinge cracked, spine bumped, cloth slightly rippled.

Foxing mainly to edges, lower edge shelf-soiled, spine and corners bumped.  As the author states in the Preface, this is "a mere compilation of the more memorable events recorded in standard histories".

Charlotte Mary Yonge published many books, mainly novels and works of moral improvement for children.  Her most well-known work, The Heir of Redclyffe, was published in 1853. New Ground tells the story of an English clergyman's family uprooted to South Africa. The frontispiece shows one daughter retrieving the chest of Communion Plate from a fire - for which she pays a heavy price.
