Introduction:
IN Part S of this series I traced the development of the diesel-mechanical railcar from its 1930s embryonic form until the establishment and subsequent operation of the huge fleet of DMUs which were required by the BR Modernisation Plan. This, I have chosen to call the 'First Generation' because we are now witnessing the swansong of these vehicles, and their DMU fleet replacements are now entering service. However, it was not only the diesel-mechanical railcar that featured in the Modernisation Plan; although it was certainly the more important in sheer numerical order. One Region chose not to utilise the DMU, but to go its own way instead and to develop the diesel-electric power unit for multiple-unit use. This Region was of course, the Southern, and it is this fleet of DEMUs that are first of all to be described in this book. The second part of the book describes the new fleet of DMUs now being introduced - the 'New Generation' - and between the two parts there is an analysis of the various experiments and alternative prototypes that BR and outside industry developed, before deciding upon the 'New Generation' designs.
