World's Railways, The By G Gibbard Jackson Hard Cover 165 pages
The Worlds Railways By G Gibbard Jackson Hard Cover 165 pages 13 two or full color plates. Date unknown.
RAILWAYS are friendly things, especially to the very young and to the very old. My very earliest recollection, from days of babyhood, is of a station where there were several engines, one fairly bellowing with excess steam, and others with brightly polished domes. I do not know in the least where that station is, nor can I trace the railway, but the impression remains as vivid as if it occurred but yesterday.
From that experience I date my love of the iron road, and all its people. By people, I mean besides the railwaymen, the locomotives and coaches, yes, and the humble trucks too-all have an individuality, especially the engines.
If the horse is the noblest of animals, then the steam locomotive is the noblest of things mechanical. With the horse it has very much in common ; it shares the same kind of work, and it is affected by the same conditions. The overloaded horse pants up the hill, and towards the top he is almost breathless, sometimes completely so.
The locomotive is exactly the same. The animal repays the kindly touch, the careful grooming and proper feeding ; so does the locomotive. And so we might go on to find numerous other points of resemblance. In this book the locomotive has a great deal of space-rightly so, I think, and although we set out to look at the world's railways, we stay quite a long time at home. You may never go abroad, but hundreds of my readers will travel the homeland, and they will want to know all about things on the iron road.
