Antique Solid Brass Apothecary Mortar w/ 2 ears and Pestle Ottoman Era w/ Patina

This is a beautiful pattern of old heavy mortar and pestle (please read the specifications below). The mortar comes with two ears at the sides. It was used for grinding of medicine, herbs or spices.

According to the experts, this mortar and pestle belongs back to the Ottoman era between the years 1900 and 1920. It was made in old Istanbul and was widely used in the Mediterranean cities in Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon, beside Turkish areas.

There are few tiny spots in some areas, as well as a beautiful patina at the base of the mortar. According to my research, this patina was formulated because some people at that time used to test the mortar and/or pestle by burning it to check if it’s real brass or not. Most probably, age and usage also affected them and normally formulated the patina.

I left the mortar and pestle without any chemical cleaning or polishing. I don’t prefer at all to clean such valuable items by chemicals. I just removed the dust over them.

My items are stored in a smoke/pet free home; and stored with ultimate care.
