Good products are worth their weight in gold when times are a little harsh - and this album was certainly a genially placed stopgap. In 1959, at the time when RCA launched this record on the market, the label’s shinning rock star was out of the country doing his military service in Germany. In order to comfort all his fans during his forced absence, the record bosses produced an album with a smartly uniformed Elvis on the cover, smiling widely to let his faithful followers know that he’d be back soon. There was a special calendar, too, so that his fans could count off the days until his return. This marketing ploy was extremely successful. The record became a highly desirable collector’s item and even years later illegal dollars still flowed from pirate copies.

The RCA producers kept mum about when and where the tracks were recorded. But who cares about that when listening to Elvis giving the "blue grass" classic "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" his unmistakable, rockabilly sound? The other titles, all of them performed by a well-proven ensemble of rock ‘n’ roll musicians, are filled with the honest, powerful language of the young - or from today’s viewpoint, old - Elvis. 40th Anniversary 180g Vinyl Double LP chronicles Presley's last major studio sessions spent at Stax Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis in July and December 1973.

Elvis At Stax bristles with energy and dynamism including singles that skirted the Top 40 from 1973 to 1975.

The desire for a new sound found Elvis performing with members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB Band.

Etched in music history, 1973 was a crucial watershed year for Presley, in the wake of his return to extended concert touring in 1972, after 12 years away from the stage and 27 movies in Hollywood. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, sought a world-class mega-event to underscore the touring, which led to the one-hour global satellite broadcast from the Honolulu International Center Arena on January 14, 1973, viewed by over one billion people around the world.

The highs of 1972-'73 led Presley and Colonel Parker to accept a multi-million dollar offer from RCA for an outright transfer of Presley's complete back catalog. He wanted a new start, new control, and a new publishing company. But the RCA deal also called for his return to the studio and a promise for him to deliver 24 new masters.

Four years earlier, in 1969, Presley had made his Memphis recording return at Chips Moman's American Studios. These triumphantly successful sessions had yielded a year-long string of 'comeback' hit singles including "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds". But by 1973, American Studios had closed up shop, and most of its musicians had relocated to Nashville. However, Stax Studios, the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Booker T. and The MGs, and Isaac Hayes, was still thriving at its original space on McLemore Avenue. In fact, Isaac Hayes relinquished his studio time to accommodate Presley.

Presley spent 12 days at Stax in 1973 (July 21-25, and December 10-16), and the roller coaster ride of those sessions is detailed in Gordon's liner notes.

Elvis Presley Live At The International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada August 26, 1969 2LP 50th Anniversary Of Las Vegas Concert On Double LP!

"I was missing the contact with a live audience," Elvis says in this show, and at every show during his first engagement at The International Hotel in Las Vegas. Apart from two shows in 1961 and the recent TV show, Elvis hadn't performed on stage for 11 years. After years of increasingly worse movies and diminishing record sales, Elvis had just managed to turn his career around with his 1968 TV special. The show had aired on December 3, 1968, and it was a surprising reminder to the world of just how magnetic a performer Elvis Presley still was. Just weeks later Elvis recorded more than 30 songs in Memphis, some of the best work of his career, and the return to live performances on July 31, 1969 was the third step of his resurrection as an artist.

The entire four-week engagement was sold out, and fans and critics were ecstatic. The New York Times wrote "…Elvis Presley came to this place and provided an unbelievable exercise in pure, exciting rock 'n' roll." There was a wild, almost manic, energy to the performances, displaying a burning desire from Elvis and his band to show the full potential of their abilities.

This show demonstrates all the charm and charisma of Elvis and his great, new band, combining repertoire of mainly blues-tinged rock 'n' roll, with a few beautiful ballads and his two, new, hit singles, "In The Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds." Recorded at the 2,000-seater showroom of the International, the intimate setting also gave Elvis the opportunity to talk to his audience, cracking jokes and telling a 10 minute story of his career, giving a rare insight to an otherwise very private man.

More incredible fame followed as the Girl Happy movie starring Elvis Presley became a top box office smash. The 60’s beach movie soundtrack album also was a blockbuster as it rose to the top ten charts, making this his 22nd smash album in a row! Both the Girl Happy movie and soundtrack LP truly proved once again that his career was unlike any other in music history.

Filled with more hits than a Ft. Lauderdale jukebox, the Girl Happy album takes off with several smashes in a row, including the classic title track rocker Girl Happy featuring Scotty Moore’s trail blazing guitar work and the chart hit single Do the Clam. More soundtrack treasures follow with the beautiful hit single ballad Puppet on a String and the rockin’ I’ve Got to Find My Baby, which truly made the album a treasure trove of hits. The album also features the stellar rock blues of Cross My Heart and Hope to Die and the brilliant Red West composition You’ll Be Gone. Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early fifties, and as a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single Heartbreak Hotel forever etched The King of Rock and Roll trademark to his name.

Over the next three decades, Elvis Presley would release dozens of hit albums and tons of smash singles, spend time in the Army, star in over 35 top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all time. In 1961, his career ignited even further thanks to his highly successful Blue Hawaii movie and companion multi-million selling soundtrack album.

Already gaining popularity in thanks to two chart single smashes Can’t Help Falling in Love and Rock-A-Hula Baby, this masterwork soundtrack album also included a treasure trove of Elvis Presley tracks that captured a very great time in the musical history of this iconic legend.

As the movie would become a major box office smash, The King kept his audience wanting more as the LP would go on to become the biggest soundtrack album of his career and one of the biggest soundtracks of the sixties.

This album was meant as a pacifier for Elvis' fans in the two year hiatus he would be unable to record any new songs.
