Product Description:

Listing Update...I only have one of these stems left in stock and it is shopworn...consisting primarily of chips in the black enamel finish on one side of the stem body (from the way they were bulk packed). I still believe this last stem to be new-old-stock (with no evidence of the stems ever having been mounted in a threaded fork steerer tube), but please expect the shopwear illustrated in the pictures (as the pictures represent the last of these stems we have available).

This offering is for a new-old-stock 3T oversized chromoly steel quill stem in a size 140 mm (note: this measurement is taken from a side profile and measures the center-to-center length of the stem body). The stem body is made from a tubular steel (as discussed in more detail below) and the hardware is also steel...with the exception of the wedge (which is made from an aluminum alloy).

The most notable stem specification is the quill, which measures 31.8 mm (1 1/4") in diameter. We have never come across a quill of this size and we are not even sure what kind of a bike (maybe a tandem or a mountain bike with an extremely oversized head tube/fork steerer tube) would require such a stem. We're guessing the outside diameter of a threaded fork steerer would have to be at least 1 3/8" to accept this stem...and I guess that means the head tube on a frame would have to measure around 1 1/2" in diameter to be compatible with what we have described. Please also note the bar clamp is much more common in terms of it's sizing...with a caliper measurement of 25.6 mm (in diameter) with a loose clamp bolt (so there should be no problem clamping down on most upright style bars with a 25.4 mm clamp diameter).

Moving past it's overall size, one very nice feature of this stem includes the internal routing (on the underside of the stem extension) of the brake cable with a built-in cable housing stop (refer to the last picture in the sequence to the left). We've been told this is one of the more sensible approaches to "guiding" a cable from the brake lever to the front brake when using mountain/hybrid bike style bars. This approach works well because the cable extends from the lever in a horizontal position, but once it feeds into the stem extension at one end and exits the extension at the other end, the cable has been repositioned (and allowed) to drop straight down to the front brake. There is also less cable housing, because of the cable stop built into the underside of the stem extension, which will improve performance as there will be less cable housing needed, which should reduce the binding or friction that can occur as a cable moves back and forth within the cable housing.

We also have to believe these stems should be very stiff/durable, as they have been constructed with about 1 lb. of chromoly steel...so a little on the heavy side, but we would guess this translates into a fairly durable stem (especially when also considering the diameter of the tubing). This particular model is also TIG welded and the extension seems very well thought out in that it is a tapered design...as opposed to being a uniform cylinder shape. More specifically, the extension is a taller oval shape at the steerer and a flatter oval shape at the stem clamp. It's subtle, but still much nicer then some of the less expensive quill stems we see where the extension is a uniform cylinder shape from one end to the other.

As noted above, we only have one of these stems left in stock and while it's new-old-stock, it's shopworn (and also note the pictures represent the last of these stems we have available).

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.

Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
