This stunning 1969 release from respected soul songwriter Isaac Hayes catapulted him to fame with a musical style like no other that combined soul, jazz, and rock. With only four songs, this expansive disc was both an R&B smash and FM rock radio staple that yielded the two-sided Top 40 hit of “Walk On By” and “By The Time I Get To Phoenix.” This is definitely a classic album that created a new sound that’s still being explored today. When the term “deep groove” was coined they must have had this record in mind.

"Theme From Shaft" (Side 1)
The undisputed anthem for what would be called Blaxploitation, "Theme From Shaft" is as popular and well-known as the movie it supported. The song opens with the ever-recognizable wah-wah, funked-up guitar chords, and we're quickly treated to Isaac Hayes' soul-drenched lyrics convincing ANYONE that this guy Shaft is one "b-a-d m*****…shut your mouth." The song oozes with the cool confidence that made the character Shaft one of the relative first Black film heroes.

"Theme From Shaft" earned Hayes his only Number One pop single in late 1971, winning an Oscar for Best Song, and helping him become the first Black composer to win an Oscar for Best Score.

"Soulsville" (Side 1)
Another one of Isaac Hayes' biggest hits, "Soulsville" provides the contrast of a down-tempo ballad outlining the plight of life in the ghetto. It's an emotional tale of poverty, drugs, desperation and faith.

"Do Your Thing" (Side 2)
Pure funk. This nearly 20-minute jam demonstrates just how potent the Stax houseband, The Bar-Kays, could be. They establish a groove in which you can comfortably loose yourself. After "Theme From Shaft," this was the most popular hit from the Shaft movie soundtrack. It climbed to Number Three on the Billboard chart, a remarkable feat for such a long, mostly-instrumental song.

"You've done it again. The Theme from Shaft Stax reissue that AP scores an absolute 10 ! This may be your BEST one yet, because it blew me away when I played it. The second time around, it shut down my amp for 30 seconds (thermal protection).

DO YOUR THING - FULL LENGTH VERSION

SHAFT - STAX RECORDS DOUBLE COMPLETE LP GERMAN PRESSED STX-88002 TREMENDOUSLY RARE OUT OF PRINT PRESSING - Shaft is Isaac Hayes' crowning achievement. Besides being one of the most successful soundtrack albums of all time, spending over a year on Billboard's pop album chart, which it also topped, it opened the door for a number of other R&B artists, including Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Norman Whitfield, to write for motion pictures. Besides such memorable tunes as "Ellie's Love Theme," "Soulville," the Wes Montgomery-inspired "Cafe Reggio's" and the nearly 20-minute funk opus "Do Your Thing," the double-disc album includes the classic "Theme from Shaft," itself a No. 1 pop hit. THE ISAAC HAYES MOVEMENT - ENTERPRISE RECORDS OUT OF PRINT ENS-1010 ISSUE - SO LONG OUT OF PRINT THE LP JACKET DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A BARCODE. . . I first heard this album back in 1972 when I remember always puttiing on the "blue 8-track" it came in. The 8-track has long since warped, but thanks to vinyl, the album still remains steadfast as part of my collection. Always a huge fan of Ike's arrangements, I'm particularly amazed that his "Something" is actually ten times better and more interesting than the original. The John Blair violin solo blasts high pitched over the runaway drumming during it's raucous finale, with the screeching representing the correct way to climax an already overwhelming composition. Familiar realities come into play lyrically on "I Stand Accused" and "One Big Unhappy Family", as the pain felt by the narrator translates perfectly into the arrangement. Never has a four-song album affected the listener so much. The depth in these songs is staggering. No wonder I've been listening to this for thirty years.

TRUCK DRIVER RARE DOUBLE LP FROM ENTERPRISE RECORDS DOUBLE LP SET ENS 7507 OUT OF PRINT RARE ISSUE -  SO LONG OUT OF PRINT THE LP JACKET DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A BARCODE

- Truck Turner, a movie starring Mister Hayes, was originally released as a double LP. It contains a a wide variety of Isaac's rummage shop funkyisms ranging from the cool George Benson riffs of Driving in the Sun to the soff porn vocals of House Full of Girls to the rather amazing psychedelica of Insurance Company.

Hint: listen to the first tracks with a grain of salt. Remember the black movies of the time always had an "opener" song boasting of the main characters in an effort to define them. Then, after track one, sit back.

It is best to be riding on a long drive, or be doing something without distraction. What you get is a jump into mellow, heavily orchestrated soul/jazz/orchestra or whatever you want to call it that only Isaac was doing. Sad that he probably was limited in his commercial albums to more direct "soul" for album sales, but I bet his true passion was this music. Imagine the albums of songs with the complexity of "Cafe Regio" from Shaft. Need I say more? I believe Truck Turner is the more complex than Shaft.

ISAAC HAYES GREATEST HIT SINGLES QUALITY RECORDS PRESSED LP

Inducted in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2005!

Isaac Hayes was a driving force behind the southern soul music label Stax Records where he served as an in-house songwriter and as a record producer teaming with his partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.

He was inducted in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2005 along with Bill withers, the Sherman Brothers, Steve Cropper and John Fogerty in recognition of writing scores of notable songs for themselves and others.

Hayes began recording in the late '60s and put out several successful soul albums including Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He is well known for his musical score for the film Shaft (1971). He was awarded the Academy Award for best Original Song in 1972 for the "Theme From Shaft", which is included on this album of Greatest Hit Singles by the iconic musician.

"One of the best-available Isaac Hayes compilation, Greatest Hit Singles bypasses a couple of his later disco hits, but the result is a more unified sound that helps illustrate why Hayes was so important to the development of '70s soul...for a more concentrated dose of Hayes at his best, Greatest Hit Singles is hard to beat." - Steve Huey, allmusic
