from the art of William Heine, a German born painter who was one of the Artists Perry selected as offical Artist of the Expedition
Commodore M. C. Perry was sent by the American government to the China Seas and Japan in 1853 to deliver a message from the President and introduce our government's desire to establish relations and trade in the area. Perry's delegation returned to Japan in the following year and successfully opened ports in Japan to trade and opened consular exchange between the countries.
