Engraving by G. M. di Boni after a painting by Antonio Canova, 1813

The painting from which this engraving was madeonce hung in a villa which the artist Canova lent to the great French beatuy Juliette Recamier. This performer was given to dressing in diaphanous Greek robes and perfroming a shawl dance for the delight of her admirers.  The engraver di Boni was like Canova a Venetian and the two were acquainted from the earliest days of their careers.
